On October 5, 2023 an Orbiter, also named Psyche, will launch on a 4 year trip to reach the Psyche asteroid.

The Psyche mission will test a sophisticated new laser communication technology that encodes data in photons at near-infrared wavelengths (rather than radio waves) to communicate between a probe in deep space and Earth.

This will be a first for mankind, exploring a new type of world made of metal, not rock and ice.

Scientists have to infer the presence of metallic cores on Earth, because they lie unreachably far below our planets’ rocky mantles and crusts.

Because we cannot see or measure Earth’s core directly we can study Psyche and compare.

Psyche offers a unique window into the violent history of collisions and accretion that created terrestrial planets.

Psyche was found in 1852 by Italian astronomer Annibale de Gasparis, who named it for the goddess of the soul in ancient Greek mythology.

Psyche has an approximate diameter of 140 miles (226 KM), or about the length of Massachusetts without Cape Cod

In 1886, the city of Paris began preparations for the World’s Fair.
With only three years before the event, the city wanted an iconic 1,000-foot tower, the largest ever constructed by man, to mark Paris as the centerpiece of world technology and engineering.
Gustave Eiffel had already contributed to the structure of the Statue of Liberty and was hesitant to build the tower, but he eventually provided plans developed by his engineers and was awarded the project.
It would be a massive beast of iron designed to withstand the elements by using an adapted technique of Eiffel’s bridge construction.
As construction began, the townspeople of Champ-de-Mar berated Eiffel for destroying their skyline with a monster that seemed to consume all of Paris.
They couldn’t wait for the 1889 World’s Fair to end so the tower could be removed.
But the popularity of the tower and the adoption of radio created a new vision for Paris, and the iconic beauty of Gustave’s tower eventually won out as a worldwide recognized landmark.
Today, the tower bears Eiffel’s name and is the most visited monument in the world, drawing millions of tourists per year to the streets of Paris.

The story about the inspiration and love behind the creation of the telephone by Alexander (Alec) Graham Bell in 1876, and his then fiancé Mabel (May) Hubbard.

Alexander ‘Alec’ Bell moved to Cambridge with his parents in 1873 from Edinburgh, Scotland. His father and grandfather were experts in speech, and Alec followed in their research as a teacher of the deaf. Bell’s mother was also deaf.

Bell was hired to teach at a school for the deaf, and was also hired to tutor Mabel Hubbard, whose father founded the school. Mabel had been deaf since five, after surviving scarlet fever.

Bell became a friend of the Hubbard family, and Mr. Hubbard invested in Bell’s research in telegraphy. The original idea was to use a single telegraph wire and play multiple tones so that more than one conversation could be monitored and transmitted at the same time. As Bell worked toward sending different tones, in the fashion his expertise was used in teaching the dead, he came to the conclusion that transmitting the voice over a wire was more useful. Over the next 4 years he developed his improvements in telephone that he patented on Valentines Day in 1876.

By this time Bell and Mabel had fallen in love and were married a year later. Mabel was a remarkable young woman, who could read lips at a young age with surprising accuracy. She also learned to lip read French—a rare ability at the time.

May and Alec were supportive of each other and Bell always referred to himself as a teacher of the deaf over all his other titles. It was deafness of his mother and future wife that impacted his life and inventions both in the telephone and other designs after.

Mabel became one of the first women to invest and study aerodynamics and built an airplane later in life, after the Wright brothers had flown at Kitty Hawk in 1903.

Both Alec and Mabel were full of ideas and accomplishments, as were their family members, including Mabel’s father—who started the National Geographic Society.

There is far more to these amazing people than a 90 second video can cover, but their inspiration is admirable, and the world changed from their vision and ingenuity.

This is an artistic rendering not a scientific one. It would seem feasible that biospheres are the only way life on Mars will be possible, based on the lack of atmosphere. If a solar solution for heat could be used to convert local sand on Mars to a form of glass, then oxygen, water and heat can be conserved within the living spaces, allowing for growth of imported plants.

Assuming the pioneers to Mars solve these issues, here is an idea of what it might look like.

Did you know Mars has two moons? And that sound is very light there due to the lack of atmosphere? If we can solve all the limitations of Mars, maybe we could also learn to clean up the pollution on Earth in the process.
